A

Access code

A unique code required by coded courseware to register a student in the publisher's platform. Faculty do not use publisher-provided codes found on the BibliU Library; those are for students. 

Access length

How long a student has access to a material: by term, by year, or for the duration of the program (one semester typically equals 180 days and is the default for adoptions). This is a required field in the Adoption Tool.

Access program

An affordability model that delivers required course materials digitally through the Learning Management System (LMS) so every enrolled student is ready on the first day of class and the cost for materials is attached to the student accounts at the time of registration.

ADA

Americans with Disabilities Act; the U.S. accessibility law the BibliU Reader is built to meet.

Adoption Tool

The faculty and administrator portal at admin.bibliu.com/booklist used to submit course materials.

Annotation

A highlight, note, or marker added to a reading; annotations in BibliU ebooks are private to the student and faculty user.

BibliU App

The mobile app used for offline reading, available on iOS and Android (not supported on Amazon Kindle devices).

BibliU Library

The faculty and student-facing library of course materials accessible through each course or on the web at bibliu.com/app/#/library, showing placeholders for all materials for the current semester across every course.

BibliU Reader

The browser-based reading environment for standalone BibliU eBooks; includes highlighting, notes, accessibility tools, and offline sync.

C

Campus store employees

The institution's first point of contact for ongoing Access questions and program operations.

Census date / add-drop date

The institution's enrollment cutoff, often used as the opt-out deadline and the cutoff for opt-in/opt-out billing decisions.

Coded courseware

Courseware (e.g. Pearson MyLab, McGraw-Hill Connect/ALEKS, Cengage WebAssign) that requires an access code which students copy from the placeholder in the BibliU Library and paste into the publisher link provided by the faculty in the LMS .

Course materials charge / course fee

The line item students see for Access program materials; eligible for financial aid.

Courseware

An interactive publisher platform (homework, quizzes, adaptive learning, gradebook); an eBook is often incorporated into this platform and does not sit independently on the BibliU Library.

Courseware ebook

An ebook hosted on a publisher's platform inside courseware; these do not use the BibliU Reader.

CRN

Course Reference Number: the unique identifier your institution assigns to a specific section of a course in a given term through the SIS (Colleague, PeopleSoft, Banner, etc.). This is an optional field in the Adoption Tool.

D

Drop / Add window

The early-semester period when student rosters and faculty assignments are still changing; the BibliU library automatically updates the next day after each change, processed nightly between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m.

E

eBook

A digital textbook opened in the BibliU Reader with built-in accessibility features; no faculty configuration is needed before students can access it.

Equitable Access (EA)

An institution-wide affordability model where a single per-course or per-credit-hour fee covers required digital materials for every course a student is enrolled in through the LMS on Day 1.

F

First Day Access

The principle that every enrolled student has their required materials available on the first day of class.

I

Inclusive Access (IA)

A course-by-course affordability model where required digital materials are billed as a per-course charge and delivered through the LMS on Day 1.

ISBN

13-digit number assigned to a published material (typically starting with 978) used to identify the exact edition and format of a textbook, ebook, courseware, or OER. This is a required field in the Adoption Tool.

L

LMS

Learning Management System (e.g. D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Blackboard Ultra, or Moodle) where access program materials are delivered; the preferred path to the BibliU Library.

LTI-integrated / Code-free courseware

Courseware (e.g. Cengage MindTap, Macmillan Achieve) directly from the LMS via an integrated link (LTI), no access code is required by students.

N

NBSI

An ISBN identifier assigned by BibliU when a material does not have a publisher-issued ISBN (for example, custom or OER content).

O

OER (Open Educational Resource)

Free, openly licensed teaching material that can be delivered through BibliU and adopted in the Adoption Tool the same way as an ebook.

Offline Access

The ability to read stand-alone eBooks in the BibliU mobile app without WiFi; annotations sync when the device reconnects.

Opt-out

A student-initiated action that declines access program materials and removes the related charge (per course for IA, program-wide for EA); about 3% of students opt out.

P

Per-credit-hour fee

A common billing unit for Equitable Access programs; course materials are charged on top of (or alongside) tuition as a fee at the time of registration.

Placekeeper

The clickable tile in the BibliU library used to house access codes where applicable and direct students to courseware.

R

Read Aloud

Built-in text-to-speech feature with two voices (Samantha and Daniel) and adjustable playback speed.

References

The reference list available from the three-dot menu inside a material.

S

Save / Print to PDF

Option to download a PDF excerpt of the book; the percentage allowed is set by the publisher (usually up to 10%).

Speedreader

A built-in pacing tool that lets readers control reading speed.

SSO

Single Sign-On credentials assigned by your school and used to log in to BibliU; support tickets are tied to your SSO account.

Standalone ebook

A BibliU-delivered ebook that opens in the BibliU Reader (as opposed to an ebook embedded inside courseware). Standalone ebooks will have Reader and Accessibility features.

Start date / End date

The first and last dates students need access to a material in a course term (after finals).  This is a required field in the Adoption Tool, but can be estimated.

Three-dot menu

The menu (...) in the upper right of the BibliU ebook Reader contains Save/Print to PDF, Offline Access, References, and Help.

Engagement and access data from BibliU eBooks to help faculty evaluate adoption and identify at-risk students.

WCAG

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (pronounced "wuh-cag"); the international web accessibility standard the BibliU Reader meets the current required level.
