How to Install BibliU on Canvas
Below are the instructions for installing the BibliU App on Canvas LTI 1.1.
System Configuration
This option is set up through the Canvas Admin account for your university and will give the faculty the option to add a BibliU LTI link in their modules of their courses.
- Log in to your Canvas Admin account.
- Click on the “Admin” option on the left hand navigation bar, and then click on the name of the account you are adding this feature to.
- In the second column navigation bar on the left hand side, select the “Settings” link.
- On the top navigation bar that comes up, select the “Apps” tab.
- Select the +App button that comes up on the upper right corner. The following box will populate:
- Complete the following fields:
- Configuration Type- Manual Entry
- Name- This will be what appears for the faculty and students when they add the tool to their modules. A common name is “BibliU- Textbooks and Course Materials”
- Consumer Key- Enter the key provided to you by BibliU
- Shared Secret- Enter the secret provided to you by BibliU.
- Launch URL- https://bibliu.com/users/lti
- Domain- bibliu.com
- Privacy- Public
- Select Submit
Setting Up BibliU in Course Navigation
To set up BibliU to appear in your course navigation bar for every course, please follow the following instructions:
- Follow the steps above up to step 5.
- When the above box populates, go to the drop down and select “By URL” in the Configuration Type option. The following options will appear:
- Complete the following fields:
- Name: This will be what appears for the faculty and students in their courses’ navigation bar. A common name is “BibliU- Textbooks and Course Materials”
- Consumer Key: Enter the Key provided to you by the BibliU team.
- Shared Secret: Enter the Secret provided to you by the BibliU team.
- Config URL: Enter the Configuration URL provided at the bottom of the following webpage: https://www.eduappcenter.com/apps/6074
- Click Submit
Note: This will make BibliU appear for all courses on this account automatically.
Additional Information
Individual Information
BibliU requires both email and name to be transmitted to the application through the LMS. This is sometimes referred to as "Public" privacy or "Unrestricted".
We use this information to create a personalized account for the student, this allows them to:
- Set a password in the future (A necessity for native app use unless SSO is set up)
- Contact us through our in-app support system and receive responses
- Match Single Sign-On accounts with their LMS equivalents.

The attributes used are:
lis_person_contact_email_primary (the email address associated with their Canvas Account)
lis_person_name_given (Their full name)
Context Information
In addition, we store the context of the LMS section in order to segment users by course, which is a requirement for some content licensing arrangements.
context_id
context_label (In Canvas, this is the name of the course, ex. - Accounting 101- see example below)
context_title (In Canvas, this is the course code in the settings, ex- ACC-101-000001- see example below)
Adding BibliU to a Course Module
To add the BibliU LTI link to a module, after completing the above steps, follow the steps below:
- Select the plus sign in the upper right corner of the module:
- The following box will appear (the options will be different depending on what you have set up):
- Select the External Tool that you would like to use for your course.
- This will prefill the URL and Page Name fields, click “Add Item”.
This will allow the students to click on the BibliU link to open their library.
Linking to a specific title in a course module
To link to a specific title in a course module:
- Navigate to the course that you are looking to update.
- On the second column left hand side navigation bar, select “Settings”
- Select the “Apps” tab on the top navigation bar
- Click on the +App button in the upper right hand corner
- A box like the one below will appear:
- Complete the following fields:
- Configuration Type- Manual Entry
- Name- This will be the name of the link that you’d like to show for the students when they see the link in the module. Often times faculty members will enter the name of the textbook here.
- Consumer Key- Enter the key provided to you by the BibliU team
- Shared Secret- Enter the secret provided to you by the BibliU team
- Launch URL- https://bibliu.com/users/lti
- Domain- https://bibliu.com
- Privacy- Public
- Custom Fields- custom_launch_url=/view/books/<enterbookisbnhere>
- Click “Submit”
- Go to your modules, and click on the “+” sign in the row of the module you’d like to add your book to.
- A box like this will appear:
- On the drop down, select “External Tool”, then click on the name of the app that you’ve added to your settings. In this case it is “Accounting 101 Textbook”. This will prepopulate the URL and Page name. Click “Add Item”.
- The link will appear in your module, and it will direct the students right to the book when they click on it.
Linking to a specific page in a course module
To link to a specific page in a course module:
- Navigate to the course that you are looking to update.
- On the second column left hand side navigation bar, select “Settings”
- Select the “Apps” tab on the top navigation bar
- Click on the +App button in the upper right hand corner
- A box like the one below will appear:
- Complete the following fields:
- Configuration Type- Manual Entry
- Name- This will be the name of the link that you’d like to show for the students when they see the link in the module. Oftentimes faculty members will enter the name of the textbook here.
- Consumer Key- Enter the key provided to you by the BibliU team
- Shared Secret- Enter the secret provided to you by the BibliU team
- Launch URL- https://bibliu.com/users/lti
- Privacy- Public
- Custom Fields- This part is a bit more in depth. First, you will type “custom_launch_url=/view/books/<enterbookisbnhere>” Then navigate to the title and page that you are wanting to open for the students. It will look like this:
- When you find the page you’d like to navigate to, look at the URL for this specific page. You will see that in the URL, the eISBN is listed. Copy the URL from where the eISBN ends to the end of the URL, and paste that text after the eISBN you’ve put into the Custom Fields field so far. For example, if you want to link to the page of the title referenced above, your Custom Field would look like this:

- Click “Submit”
- Go to your modules, and click on the “+” sign in the row of the module you’d like to add your book to.
- A box like this will appear:
- On the drop down, select “External Tool”, then click on the name of the app that you’ve added to your settings. In this case it is “Accounting 101 Textbook- Chapter 7”. This will prepopulate the URL and Page name. Click “Add Item”.
- The link will appear in your module, and it will direct the students right to the book when they click on it.
